Bridgeport Connecticut - The Park City

Located in Fairfield County in Connecticut, Bridgeport has the largest population among the other cities in the state.  It is the fifth largest city in the New England area with nearly one hundred and forty five thousand residents.  This city is the core of the Greater Bridgeport area. 

This city has become well known for its connection with the great circus man and former mayor, PT Barnum of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.  He had three homes in the Bridgeport area and during the winter months he stored his circus act until it was time to get back on tour. 

Another claim to fame was the Frisbie Pie Company.  This company gave this city the claim to being the birthplace to the Frisbee.  Millions of Americans have enjoyed a spring or summer day playing with a Frisbee with the family and many dogs are trained to do tricks using the Frisbee. 

In the earlier years, Bridgeport residents relied on farming and fishing to survive.  Because the city is located on the deep Newfield Harbor, they were able to move into the shipbuilding and whaling industry during the mid-nineteenth century.  When the railroad opened in 1840, this industry really began to boom.

The city turned into a more industrial direction late in the nineteenth century when Bridgeport became a center for manufacturing.  Several goods like the Bridgeport milling machine, carriages, brassieres, ammunition, saddles, carriages, brass fittings, and saddles were produced in Bridgeport and it opened up doors for advancement in the industrial movement. 

The twenty first century has created a need for redevelopment in the downtown and surrounding areas.  Crime and poverty as well as corruption had become prominent in former years but the efforts of the community to make it a better place have paid off.  Many artists' lofts were created from a former department store as well as other conversions into rental space.  The process has been slow but it has been steady and the improvements are noticeable. 

The weather in Bridgeport is truly representative of the seasons.  The summers are humid and are very warm.  The summers are very cold and snowy.  The north and west of the Long Island Sound typically have the colder temperatures than right on the water.  Bridgeport tends to be a few degrees cooler in the summer months than the surrounding cities and it has just slightly less snowfall as well because they are closer to the coast.

There are two islands that are connected to Bridgeport.  These are Fayerweather Island and Pleasure Beach (or Steeplechase Island).  The Black Rock Harbor light can be seen on Fayerweather Island.  Either of these islands provides an afternoon or more of entertainment for the family. 

Other forms of entertainment come with the many forms of live music and theater events.  The Downtown Cabaret Theatre offers children's theater, cabaret, and several different concerts.  The Playhouse on the Green offers plays and different musical events.  The Greater Bridgeport Symphony has their home at the Klein Memorial Auditorium and presents concerts and shows on a regular basis. 

There are many forms of entertainment in the Bridgeport area.  It is full of history and design as well as arts and sophistication.  The residents of Bridgeport enjoy the full spectrum of seasons as well as an up and coming town.
