Haven Connecticut - The Elm City
Among the cities in Connecticut, New Haven is the
second to the largest. It is a steadily increasing city that is home to the Ivy
League school, Yale University. Yale University is one of the largest reasons
for the successes of New Haven. It is the largest employer in the area and the
biggest tax payer as well. The city is also well known for their healthcare,
engineering, architectural, and financial services. Nearly one hundred and
thirty people reside in New Haven. The majority of those residents reside in the
Greater New Haven Metropolitan area.
In 1638, New Haven was founded. The original eight
streets, four by four grid of the streets that were first laid out is known as
the Nine Square Plan to the American Institute of Certified Planners. These
original streets are now referred to as New Haven Green and are considered to be
a national historic landmark. It can be found in the center of New Haven's
downtown area.
The very first program to plant public trees was
developed and initiated in New Haven. The city is now covered in mature trees
that add beauty and shade to the city. This is what led to the nickname, The Elm
City. As you take in the beauty that is New Haven you are sure to notice how
much great impact this program has made on this city.
The weather in New Haven is considered to be a
summer like, humid climate. The summers are typically fairly warm to just
a little hot and the humidity levels are typically high. This often times
results in thunderstorms in the late afternoons. The temperatures in the
spring and fall are very nice and cool and there is a moderate amount of
precipitation. During the winter months there are often snowfalls with
accumulation.
Manufacturing was the prime influence in their
economy but after the war, there was a rapid shift as the factories began to
close as the industrial influence swiftly took a decline. At the same
time, Yale University began expansions which lead to a new influence in their
economy. As of today, Yale University provides services that make up half
of the city's economic growth. The services at the University as well as
the Yale New Haven Hospital opened up many opportunities for the residents of
the area.
There are other areas of industry currently in New
Haven. They include construction and mining, trade, government positions,
agriculture, transportation and utilities, and finance and real estate.
While these trades are much smaller than the opportunities that are provided by
the Yale University, they still open the doors to other job opportunities in the
area.
There are many sources of entertainment in the New
Haven area which include museums and theaters. Many of the museums are
associated with Yale University and display historic pieces like the Gutenberg
Bible. There are family museums like the Connecticut Children's Museum and
the Yale University Art Gallery.
New Haven is a beautiful city with history and
prestige. The Yale University adds a level of sophistication to the city
that is unparalleled in the surrounding areas. New Haven provides
entertainment as well as strong roots in history to anyone who visits even for a
short stay.
