Norwalk Connecticut

The city of Norwalk is found in Fairfield County in Connecticut. There are just over eighty five thousand residents in Norwalk which ranks it sixth in size among the other cities in Connecticut. This city is considered to be part of the metropolitan area of New York. The name Norwalk, is derived from the Algonquian word "noyank" which means "point of land". It is also known as a derivative of the Native American name "Naramauke" which is the name of a Native American chief.

A very important part of the commerce in Norwalk includes oyster farming. This city has been tagged with the nickname "Oyster Town" and it is home to the annual Oyster Festival held each and every September. The Norwalkers, as many of the residents are often called, are proud to welcome people from all surrounding areas to their festival.

In 1640, Roger Ludlow purchased a piece of land between the Saugatuck and the Norwalk rivers and this is where he chartered the town of Norwalk in 1651. This land was perfect because in only a days walk you could find yourself at the sea. This town began to thrive until 1779 during the Revolutionary War. It was at this time that nearly all of the town was destroyed by British forces and only six homes were left standing at the end.

When the Revolutionary war was over, many people were compensated for their loss during the war by giving them property in the Connecticut Western Reserve, which is now called Norwalk Ohio. The city of Norwalk Connecticut began to bounce back in 1849 when the New York and New Haven railroad began running through Norwalk.

The city of Norwalk has many neighborhoods to offer to someone that is considering moving into the city. You can choose from any of the charming residential areas like Broad River, Cranbury, Spring Hill, Harborview, West Rocks, or Southern Norwalk which is commonly known as SoNo. These neighborhoods are bordered by Westport, Wilton, New Canaan, Darien, and Long Island Sound.

The weather in Norwalk provides a full glimpse of the season. You will find warm summers that are sometimes even hot and humid and the winters are full of snow. The closer you are to the Long Island Sound, the cooler the temperatures will be at night and during the day. .The warmest month of the year tends to be July and the coolest month is typically January.

There are many things to do and see in Norwalk Connecticut. You can spend a day exploring the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum which is a 62 room mansion that is considered to be one of the oldest and most beautiful homes that have ever been built in the Second Empire style. It is a National Historic Landmark and has been used to make movies like the remake of the movie, The Stepford Wives.

There are exciting and interesting things to see at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. This aquarium displays the marine life that you can find in the Long Island Sound. The ecology of the area is an amazing site to take in and you could easily spend an afternoon with the family seeing all of the aquatic life that the Long Island Sound has to offer.
