Stamford, Connecticut - The City That Works
Located in
Fairfield County in Connecticut, Stamford is the fourth largest city in the
state. It has a population of over one hundred and twenty two residents and it
is the eighth largest city in New England. It is a part of the Greater New York
Metropolitan area and is in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area.
The first
settlers in the area as well as the Native American inhabitants referred to the
Stamford area as Rippowam. The name was officially changed to Stamford in
reference to a town in Lincolnshire, England. After the deed to Stamford was
signed in 1640, the eighteenth century made Stamford known for their water
merchandising. This is possibly due to how close it was to New York City.
Residents
of New York first began building vacation homes on the shoreline in Stamford in
the late 19th century. Some New York residents actually moved their
primary residence to Stamford and simply took the railway in and out of
Manhattan. This idea spread and through the later years, many people chose to
move into Stamford and commute for business needs.
Because of
the commercial real estate boom in the sixties and seventies, many large
corporations decided to move out of New York central and into the surrounding
areas. This resulted in a large downtown area being built in Stamford. What was
the tallest structure in the city, One Landmark Square, was built and it was
twenty one floors high. While this was the tallest structure early in the city's
history, it is currently just a small building when compared to the Trump Parc
condominium that is thirty five stories tall.
The
climate in Stamford can be described as humid continental. The average high
temperature through the year is 62.4 F. The warmest month to visit this area is
in July when the temperatures are, on average, around 85 degrees during the
days. If snow is a favorite, visiting during from November to March you can
experience over twenty inches of snow on average. It is common during winter
months for the northern part of Stamford to have snow while the city and the
coastal areas only experience rain.
There are
many parks and attractions to be seen in Stamford. Cummings Park is a public
beach that is available to play in the sun. Cove Island Park, which was once a
farm and then a huge factory, offers its visitors many beaches to play and
perfect sites for picnics. Another attraction at Cover Island Park is the
wildlife sanctuary that offers great opportunities for bird watchers and nature
lovers.
While
visiting Cove Island Park, take a trip across the parking lot to the Terry
Connors Ice Rink and let the family have fun on the ice. They offer public ice
skating for the entire family, no matter what their ice skating abilities are.
They also provide ice skating lessons and ice hockey. The Stamford Youth Hockey
Association calls this home as well.
There are
two municipal golf courses available to choose from as well. Sterling Farms Golf
Course was opened in 1972 and is the more popular of the two courses. It has a
restaurant, a driving range, and multiple tennis courts. The E. Gaynor Brennan
Golf Course, which is called Hubbard Heights by the locals, opened officially in
1922 as a private course. It is currently under renovation.
