In Hartford County, Connecticut there is a
small town named West Hartford, CT. This town was settled in the 1700s by
Protestants that moved from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Up until the early
1900s this was a town still deeply rooted in agriculture. It was at this time
that the majority of the well to do that lived in Hartford moved away and they
were soon followed by the white middle class citizens as they all created a
thriving suburb known as West Hartford.
West Hartford has been referred to as an
"upmarket inner-ring suburb" of Hartford. While West Hartford is small it does
have a downtown which is referred to West Hartford Center. The downtown area is
centered around North/South Main Street and Farmington Avenue. The West Hartford
Center has been the hub of the community since the late 17th century.
The United States Census Bureau lists the
town as being made up of 22.4 square miles in total, 22 square miles of it is
land that the remaining is water. On the west side you will find the Metacomet
Ridge, this is a rather mountainous ridgeline that extends to Long Island Sound
and the Vermont border. One of the must see spots is the Talcott Mountain which
can be seen in West Hartford. There are also a few highland water reservoirs
that sit amongst the Metropolitan district.
During the last census in 2000, West Hartford
was home to 63,589 people, 24576 households and 15925 families. That makes a
population density of 2892.6 people per square mile. The diversity of the town
is rather limited compared to other cities. The majority of the inhabitants
being white (85.96%), followed by Hispanic or Latino (6.27%), Asians (4.8%),
African Americans (4.78%), Native Americans (.12%) and Pacific Islanders (.07%).
There are approximately 2.5% from other races and 1.7% of the population are
considered mixed.
Out of the 24576 households approximately 30%
of them have children under the age of 18 living at home. Married couples made
up 53% of the households and 35% of the household were non-family households.
The average size of a household is 2.39 and the average family size was 3. There
is a disparity in ages through the population with the 25% of the people being
between the ages of 25 and 44. Twenty two percent were under 18 years of age,
