City of Abilene, TX

Abilene is one of the largest cities in Taylor County, Texas, and is the county seat. It is a rapidly expanding city, and many people have come in to Abilene in recent years to swell its population to 117,063, according to the census of 2010. Abilene also has a rich history, and the origin of the once-small town is an interesting one.

Abilene began as simply a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway, and began as a small settlement 0f cattlemen and ranchers. The city was founded in 1881, and was named after the Kansas city of the same name. It was the final destination of the Chisholm Trail, and was established to create an easy access for the Texas and Pacific Railway that has bypassed Buffalo Gap, the town that was the county seat in those days.

Clabe Merchant, a rich landowner and officially recognized as the "Father of Abilene", decided to name the town Abilene, which was roughly 800 people camping in one area at the time. The plans and divisions of the city were drawn up by Colonel J. Stoddard Johnson, and the auctioning off of tracts of land within the limits of the "town" was held March 5, 1881. By the end of the second day of auctions, over 300 plots of land had been sold, and Abilene was officially born.

Within the next year, the citizens of Abilene had decided that their town was the best location for the county seat, and won the election. The Progressive Committee was created in 1888, and was formed by the town as a means of enticing businesses to be established in their town. By the end of the century, over 3,000 people lived in the expanding town, and efforts continued to expand the town. However, by 1910, there were still just over 9,000 people living in Abilene, which would remain consistent until a number of universities were opened.

Simmons College was the first college established in Abilene, and the college that would later be renamed the Hardin-Simmons College opened its doors for the first time in 1891. The next university to open its doors was Children's Classical University in 1906, now known as Abilene Christian University. McMurry University was originally named McMurry College and opened in 1923.

In 1940 the citizens of Abilene held a drive to raise money, all for the purpose of buying land that was to be a U.S. Army base. It was named Camp Barkeley and held sixty thousand men, which happened to be more than double the population of Abilene at the time. The base closed a few years later, leading to worries that the drop in the local economy would drive residents out.

However, a number of servicemen would return to Abilene in order to begin their own businesses, which enabled the citizens of Abilene to raise nearly $900,000 that enabled them to buy land on which to establish an Air Force base. Dyess Air Force Base is the largest employer in the city of Abilene, employing just over 6,000 people.

Abilene opened the first downtown reinvestment zone in Texas in 1982, and soon a branch of Texas State Technical College opened in Abilene. Cisco Junior College, the French Robertson Prison Unit, the Grace Museum, and the Paramount Theatre all call Abilene home, as well as the Frontier Texas! Tribute museum.
