About Carrollton, Texas

Settlers first came to Carrollton, Texas from Illinois, and borrowed the name from the same town that they came from. In may of 1878, the name Carrollton became the official town name when the first small post office was opened. People were hardy, having given up everything they had in order to pursue their dreams of prosperity in an untamed wild. There are many different stories of hardship and triumph, as they raised sheep and cattle, plowed fields for their crops, and erected their homes and churches.

The City Of Carrolton sits on the edge of three counties, Dallas, Denton, and Collin county. It is a suburb of Dallas Texas, and as of the 2005 census, is a city with a population of just under 123,000 people. The city itself was in 2006 named one of the 100 best places to live or relocated, named by Money Magazine in 2008 as the 15thbest city to live for small cities in the country.

There are many different reasons why Carrollton has been named one of the top fifteen small towns to live in – one is low Carrollton Electricity rates. There is the A.W. Perry Homestead Museum, where you can catch a glimpse of what it was like to be a pioneer in Texas. The original structure was the actual home of Perry's son, Dewitt, restored to it's former glory in 1976. The original foundation stones are still part of the back yard. There are several different parks, golf courses, and sports fields in Carrollton, as well as the surrounding area. There are many historical sites around Carrollton, from the Carrollton Town Square, and is still the focal point for many community activities. The Post office near the square has been on the same site since the 1890's. There is the Furneaux Cemetery, established in 1884, with the first person buried here, one William Furneaux, immigrating from England in 1857. One historic site that everyone should visit is the Carrollton Railroad Crossing, where this track provided services from the Cotton Belt, Kansas, St. Louis, and even San Francisco. Commercial and passenger services here is what made Carrollton prosper, bringing more population, as well as goods into the town. While the marker was damaged and removed to make sure it remained safe, a new DART light rail train line will soon stop here, and the marker is planned to be reinstalled.

Carrollton is one of the best places to visit, and a great small town. It is close to all the attractions that it's nearby neighbors have, such as Dallas, and Fort Worth, but far enough away that it doesn't have all the problems that also come along with living in the big city.
