City of Plano, TX

Plano, TX is a city of 274,000 within the Dallas metropolitan area, and just a few miles north of Dallas. With one of the lowest poverty rates (6.4 per cent), Plano is also one of the richest cities in the country; it ranks number one among cities larger than 250,000, with a mean income of $85,000. It is no surprise then that Money magazine declared Plano to be the best city in the western United States, and in the top 11 overall.

Yet it isn't just the income potential that has driven Plano's meteoric rise in population, from around 100,000 in 1980 to almost 3 times that today. The schools are among the nation's best, with test scores among the best in the country. Safety, too, is a huge draw for Plano - the city was recently deemed by Forbes magazine to be the safest city in the country. Plano electricity companies also offer some of the lowest rates available in the State of Texas.

History

Plano first began to be settled in the 1840s, and soon had a local store, sawmill and mail delivery, which attracted even more settlers. The new town was in need of a name. After much debate, Plano, which, in reference to the local terrain, is Spanish for flat, was settled on.

With the 1872 inauguration of both the Texas and Houston Railroads, the city began growing, albeit somewhat slowly. It wasn't until the 1970s that growth began taking off, growing from 17,000 in 1970 to 72,000 in 1980.

As an attractive place to do business, several large companies located the headquarters of their national operations in Plano during the 1980s. The result was that population went through another growth surge, skyrocketing to today's 272,000, making Plano one of Dallas's largest suburbs.
