Round Rock, TX
Round Rock, Texas is a city of about 105,000 located 20 miles north of Austin. Noted for being the 4th safest city with a population over 100,000 in the country, Round Rock is also one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Money Magazine has called Round Rock as one of the top 10 small cities to live in America.
For parents seeking a strong school system to educate their children, Round Rock is an ideal destination, with the Round Rock School District ranking among the state's best.
History
Round Rock has a colorful history, dating from the founding a small village near a large, round-shaped rock that sat in the middle of Brushy Creek. In 1854, the growing town was named Round Rock, and served as a prime location for moving cattle.
Jesse Chisholm, following the civil war, established a route through the area that became known as the Chisholm Trail—one of most famous cattle crossings in America; cattle were transported through here from South Texas all the way up to Kansas. This area has been preserved as a the historic district of Old Town. The history of the crossing is also described at the Chisholm Trail Crossing Park, replete with a walking tour and visual displays describing the history of the cattle drives through this region.
Another claim to fame (or notoriety) was the slaying of the famous train robber, Sam Bass. On July 19, 1878, the Texas Rangers tracked Bass to Round Rock. When he tried to escape, Bass was gunned down in a battle with the Rangers George Herold and Richard Ware. Known as the Sam Bass Shootout", the event is commemorated and reenacted every year.
Economy
From the 1850s to the 1950s, Round Rock's primary industry was cotton and other agriculture. Since the opening of Interstate 35 in the 1950s, Round Rock has grown rapidly, but until the 1990s was mainly a bedroom community for people who worked in Austin, but chose to live in Round Rock due to the lower cost of living and real estate. Following the relocation of the Dell Computer Company's headquarters to Round Rock, along with the 16,000 employees it brought or hired, the economy really began to take off.
While still serving as a bedroom community for those who commute to Austin, Round Rock has attracted many other vibrant businesses, to include companies in the sectors of clean energy, computer and software manufacturing, and advanced manufacturing. A few of the other companies that have followed Dell to Round Rock include Hospira and TECO-Westinghouse. Major local employers include IKEA, Sears Customer Care, Komico Technology, and the Cerilliant Corporation. Companies are attracted by the ultra-low property taxes and cost of doing business, the strong commitment to economic growth by the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce, and the low utility rates.
Recreation and Tourism
The city is also known for good reason as "The Sports Capital of Texas", with the Dell Diamond stadium (named after the Dell Computer Co.) being only one of dozens of sports outlets across the city, ranging from golf, skateboarding, and naturally, baseball.
The historical attractions of the Chisholm Trail Crossing Park and Old Town also draw legions of visitors every year. The Inner Space Caverns display wonderful underground formations, and Lake Travis provides fisherman, campers, hikers and boaters with a 60 mile lake to relax in the Central Texas Hill Country.
