This amazing city began its life as a sugar plantation, and is home to the headquarters of Imperial sugar. At one time the company's main sugar refinery, and distribution center was located within the city. Sugar Land has a long and very interesting history that many of the residents are proud of. One of the first ever settlers to the area was Samuel M Williams in 1838, who named his land "Oak Plantation" due to the high numbers of different varieties of Oak trees in the area. They began to use the plantation for sugarcane, cotton, and corn. It was sold several times before being acquired by the partnership that is now the Imperial Sugar Company.

The trains that pass through Sugar Land are some of the oldest in Texas, and at one time would have travelled directly through the middle of the town. Between the years of 1910 and 1959, the city was virtually self-contained, and needed no outside influences at all. Housing was provided by the Imperial sugar Company, and even built a hospital, and school. Many of the original houses that were built during this time remain today, and have been passed from generation to generation.

As the town began to expand the government began to become interested, and in 1959, Sugar Land became a general law city. In the 1960's, further developments were built opening up a whole new area called Sugar Creek. Within these new area golf courses, swimming pools, and leisure facilities were all included making it a very desirable place to live. Due to the huge success of this development, another began in the 70's, and was as breath taking as the first.

Throughout the 1990's, the growth in the city was amazing, and it was considered the fastest growing city in the US. A huge amount of industrial growth brought further employment, housing, and a population increase. In 2002, the cities Higher Education facilities were moved, and expanded to a new site. Although in 2003, the original Imperial Sugar Company plant was closed, it has brought so much to the city that it only had an emotional impact.
