Wichita Falls is situated in Texas, and is the principal city of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. This city has an overall population of just over 100,000 people, and is home to the Sheppard Air Force base. This picturesque city is positioned perfectly in the North of Texas, and is only 15km south of the border with Oklahoma. There is plenty to see and do in this fascinating city that attracts visitors from all over the world.

In the early 18th century, the city was dominated by the presence of the Choctaw Indians who were descendants of the Hopewellian People. Towards the end of the 1860's, settlers began to arrive, and established their cattle ranches in the area. Although there was no formal city as such, this was to change in 1872 when town lots were sold, and the city of Wichita Falls was born. The city did not have much growth until the Fort Worth and Denver railway arrived in 1882.

Shortly after the railways arrival the city began to expand westward away from the depot, today this area of the city is a historic landmark. The city took its name from the stunning falls that were present in the area; however, these were destroyed in 1886 by an incredible flood. For over 100 years, visitors would come to the city to see the waterfalls but there were none.

Due to a massive demand, it was decided to build substitute falls in Lucy Park. These impressive falls stand at 54ft tall, and circulate over 3,500 gallons of water per minute. This incredible park in Wichita Falls is very popular with locals, and tourists who visit the city. Lucy Park is over 170 acres, which includes picnic areas, a golf course, playgrounds, ponds, and log cabins. The paths make it ideal for cycling, running, and there is a fantastic walk taking you to the falls.

In 1964, and 1979 tornados struck the city causing a vast amount of damage, and destruction. The earliest one struck the airbase killing 7 people, and over 100 injured. The damage cost the city over $15 million and was the first tornado ever to be broadcast on national TV. Although with the second tornado there was over an hour's warning it still took 42 lives, and left over 20,000 people homeless. This tornado did over $400 million in damage to buildings, houses, and vehicles.

Through many different developments throughout the city, the downtown area has begun to look worn, and in need of a face lift. The city is in the process of seeking funding to improve, and regenerate the whole area. Over the years many big oil companies, and refineries have had their offices in the city, and only in recent years have they relocated. The Sheppard Air Force Base is situated just five miles from the city, and is the largest training base for air education.

Alongside the many office buildings in the city the world's smallest skyscraper is situated. This building has been discussed for many years due to its size, and unusual design. At only 40ft tall, and over 25% of the internal space being stairs it is incredibly compact. It is now a historical landmark, and stands proudly for people to see.
