halfway between Peoria and Champaign. It is near to Normal another city in
Illinois, so near in fact that they are the primary cities in the
Bloomington-Normal metro (metropolitan) area. The population of Bloomington was
76,610 as of 2010 when the census was done. This makes ranks it fifth in the
state among the cities for population.
History of Bloomington
Before the 1520s the area Bloomington occupies
today was next to land settled by the Kickapoo Indians. Then in the 1820s the
European-American settlers began moving in. A settlement called Keg Grove came
into being which was later changed to Blooming Grove then to Bloomington. It was
then declared the county seat in December of 1830 when the county of McLean was
formed.
James Allen donated 60 acres of his own land
for the city of Bloomington. He was one of the advocates for McLean County being
formed. Abraham Lincoln practiced law in Bloomington during his career. In fact,
in went into law partnership with one John T. Stuart in the year 1837.
During the first part of the 20th century the
city of Bloomington grew and prospered. A combination railroads and highways
being built, agriculture and business success influenced its growth and how the
downtown area developed. During the 1960s and the 1970s, Bloomington went
through some changes because the malls on the outskirts became the hub for
retail activity. The old Route 66 was replaced with I-55 superhighway which did
not go to the city's core. This caused less business in the downtown area. The
downtown area went through a rebirth a couple of years ago.
