The City of Naperville in Illinois holds the distinction as the "second best place to live" in 2006 by Money Magazine.  The population according to the 2010 census was about 141,853 people in 48,655 households and 36,289 families.  This places Naperville with the rank of 169th most populous United States city. The City of Naperville sits to the southwest of Chicago proper, as part of the extensive 'chicagoland' region. This places the community in the lower northeast area of Illinois on the banks of the West Branch of the DuPage River. It sits in DuPage County. The community covers thirty-five-point-five square miles with less than a tenth of a square mile being made up of the DuPage River.

The community now known as the City of Naperville was founded in 1831 by Joseph Naper as Naper's Settlement.  At the time Chicago was still a raw and new port location on the banks of the Chicago River. The year of 1832 saw the settlement grow from a handful to over a hundred people.  In 1834, Fort Payne and the Pre-Emption House were built. The town of Chicago and the town of Galena had stagecoach service with a stop at the Settlement in those days. With the formation of DuPage County in 1839, Naper's Settlement was chosen as the county seat, which it held until 1868.

The first incorporation as Naperville was in 1857 as a village, and then this was changed to city status in 1890. Starting in the 1960's, the community began to transform from a rural to a more urban one and between 1980's and 1990's, the population grew at a great rate. In spite this all, the city managed to maintain a "small town" feel with a 'big town' sense of wealth.

Popular places to visit in Naperville include the downtown area, which is preserved and quaint. You can take the Naperville Century Walk self-guided tour and parking has been free in this area since the mid-1970's, both on the street and in public parking garages. There is also the 613 building area of Naperville Historic District, which was preserved starting back in 1969. This area exists in the eastern section of the city and is part of the National Register of Historic Places. One can check out the Moser Tower and the 'Grand' Millennium Carillon. A climb to the top grants a view of the Chicago skyline.  There are also a number of parks including Centennial Beach and park, Frontier Sports Complex, Commissioners Park, the Riverwalk, Community Garden Plots, Knoch Knolls Park, and Naperville Sportsman's Club. There are also three Libraries, the DuPage Children's Museum, Wentz Concert Hall & Fine Arts Center, and Fifth Avenue Station.

A visit to Naperville is like walking into the past and seeing the future at the same time.  While the thriving community has grown tremendously over the last thirty years or so, it still maintains the best qualities of years gone by.  So next time you need a vacation consider Naperville, Illinois.
