Rockford, IL

Rockford is a city located in Illinois of the Rock River. It is the county seat for Winnebago County. According to the U.S. 2010 census the population is 152,871 which makes it ranked third in Illinois behind Chicago and Aurora. It has a typically mid-west climate with 4 well-defined seasons. History

Rockford was established in 1834 to 1835 by a group of men, some set up on the western bank and one set up on the eastern bank of the river. The settlement became incorporating into a village in the year 1839 and was later chartered for a city in the year 1852.

The course of the city was changed by two events: in 1851 a water power company was established and the railroad in 1852 came to the city. One brought affordable power and the other provided transportation to the inhabitants of the city. Rockford grew into quite an industrial center by 1860. Agricultural machinery was one thing it was known for.

Furniture making became one of the industries in Rockford in 1876 with the first furniture company being formed. This was started by John Erlander, who immigrated from Sweden, and some other men. This was only the first of many furniture factories in the area. The furniture industry by the 1880s grew strong with the help of Swedish capitalists and craftsmen. Rockford became the second largest manufacturing center of furniture but the first part of the 20th century. 

During the 1900s Rockford had such things as the Harley Davidson dealership opened; this is the oldest surviving one in fact. Then Camp Grant, a army training facility opened in 1917 this is where infantry was trained for WW I. Later on in 1940s the Rockford Peaches made headlines as part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

Today the city is focusing on high-technology companies and tourism to its parks, museums and other attractions.

  • Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture. The Swiss cottage was built in 1865 by Robert Tinker the mayor of Rockford. With ornate woodwork, parquet floors, sculptures, murals and a spiral staircase it is something to behold. The original belongings and furnishings of the family are still there.   • The Kegel Harley-Davidson dealership in Rockford has the distinction of being the oldest family owned one worldwide for Harley Davidson. You can tour the facility and even have something to eat at the Harley Diner, in the true style of the 1950s. Contact (815) 332-7125.
