History of Springfield
In 1821, the city of Springfield, IL was
founded by 3 men, namely William Drennan, Rivers Cormack and Zachariah Peter. It
became the capital of the state by 1837. This was on some level because of the
efforts of a young politician, the famous Abraham Lincoln. He moved to
Springfield in 1837 and lived there until he became president in 1861. But let's
talk about some other happenings with Springfield over the years.
During the Civil War this city was a buzz of
activity. Soldiers trained here for one thing, the first that were commanded by
Ulysses S. Grant, who lead so many to victory during 1861 to 1862. The city was
also financial, industrial and political support for the war effort. Even
railroads and businesses were built for this purpose. Camp Butler was built in
august 1861 for the purpose of training the soldiers in Illinois. Camp Butler
was also one of the places that the Confederate prisoners of the war were kept
until 1865. After the end of the Civil War Springfield went on to become a major
link in the railroad system in Illinois. On top of farming and politics, coal
mining also became an important industry for the city by the year 1900.
Let's skip forward to February 10, 2007 when
Barack Obama then senator, announced his candidacy for president in Springfield.
This was at property where the Old State Capitol stands. In fact it was this
building that was in the background when he announced that his running mate
would be Joe Biden on August 23, 2008.
