If you live in Illinois you have choice about who to choose as an electric supplier.  It is not the actual utility that changes, but the source of the power that you receive. There are two utility companies in the state, Ameren Illinois and ComEd. The cost that they charge is a direct transfer of the price they pay to the customer.  Both companies encourage consumers to shop around themselves for suppliers who serve the area and are licensed to do business in the state.

It is notable that every consumer has the right to seek alternative suppliers no matter who they have as their utility company.  Ameren covers the southern area of the state while ComEd handles the north. Not all of the licensed retail electric suppliers service all areas of either utility company.  People seeking out an alternative supplier are advised to contact the supplier directly and as if they serve their area. This was possible because ComEd has served the northern part of the state for over a hundred years while Ameren has a long history of providing services to those in the southern half of the stare.

Consumers across the state then have to make sure that they are aware of how their bills are structured in order to understand if a retail electric supplier is giving them a better deal then what the utility company can give them.  The delivery charge does not change no matter who provides the energy being delivered. The generation of power and the transmission of it varies in cost depending on who is providing it.

It is estimated that three fourths of the power used in Illinois is provided to consumers by retail electric suppliers (also called RESs).  These suppliers must be certified with the ICC and register with the utility company before they can provide power to those customers. Consumers can benefit in more than one way by using a Retail Electric Supplier.  You may want a lower their bill or you may want to choose environmentally friendly power, or you simply may want to find the Retail Electric Supplier that offers additional services that the utility company does not. So shop around and find the right solution for your home or business.
