Baltimore Gas & Electric – BG&E

Baltimore Gas and Electric is a provider of natural gas and electricity to Baltimore residents as well as 10 other counties surrounding central Maryland. Their service area covers approximately 2300 square miles. The regulated power distribution and transmission system encompasses 24500 circuit miles of distribution lines and 1300 circuit miles of transmission lines that services more than 1.2 million customers. Baltimore Gas and Electric services more than 640,000 homes and businesses with natural gas in an 800 square mile service area. BGE was a subsidiary of Constellation Energy Group.

On May 25, 2011 Exelon Corporation and Constellation Energy Group as well as Baltimore Gas and Electric Company filed for merger approval in the Maryland Public Service Commission. There is a prehearing that is set for June 28, 2011 on the 16thfloor of the Commission starting at 10am. What will be determined at this hearing is the procedural schedule for the proceeding, they will take a look at the petitions that have been filed and consider all preliminary matters that have been requested by the parties involved. For those looking to file a petition to intervene in the matter need to have those petitions filed no later than June 24, 2011.

BG&E offers a number of programs designed to help their customers. A program such as the Limited Income Vision program is designed to help families that do not have the resources to meet their utility bill.

The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is also dedicated to protecting the environment. They have received a number of awards for their efforts and dedication to protecting the environment and wildlife. In 2008 they were given a Wildlife Habitat Council's Wildlife at Work certification for the successful and comprehensive implementation of the wildlife habitat management program on the 72 acre Spring Gardens facility.

They have also received the Tree Line USA award three times. In order for a business or a person to receive this award they have to have met certain criteria including annual workers training, tree planting, quality tree care and public education.

BG&E also has a supplier diversity program. They have taken time to develop a strategic partnership with a variety of suppliers so that BG&E are able to deliver a variety of products and services to their customers. The focus is really on making alliances with small, minority, women or service of the disabled veteran owned companies.

BG&E offers a number of helpful tips to help consumers save money including education on what in their home could be causing their energy bills to be higher.  They also offer a few different ways to be charged for energy consumption. This includes the Time of Use Pricing, which basically is a fluctuating rate that  customer is charged based on usage during peak times and off peak times during the day and through the year. The goal of the Time of Price option is to encourage smarter use of energy and decrease wastage. The rate a customer is charged is based on the wholesale price at a given time.
