Germantown, Maryland

Germantown, Maryland is located in Montgomery County and is part of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. It is the third most populated area in the state with only Baltimore and Columbia serving as home to more residents. Germantown is unincorporated and has no town council or mayor. It is divided into six villages which include Clopper Village, Churchill Village, Guners Lake Village, Neesville Village, Kingsview Village and Middlebrook Village.

Germantown began its development during the 1830s and 1840s. The majority of business in the area was near Clopper and Liberty Mill Roads. Most of the business people in the area were German, even though those who lived in the area were primarily English. Those visiting the area interacted with the business owners though in the shops, resulting in people referring to the area as Germantown.

Historically, the area is noted for being the capture location of a co-conspirator in the Lincoln assassination. George Atzerodt had been assigned the duty of killing Lincoln's Vice President, Andrew Johnson. Instead of committing the heinous act, he fled to his cousin's home in Germantown.

Midway through the twentieth century, the US Atomic Energy Commission relocated to Germantown from its original home in the nation's capital. The reason for this was to protect DC from a nuclear attack. Should an enemy wage war on the Atomic Energy Commission, Germantown was far enough away that it would be some time before the president, congress and the rest of DC was affected. It would provide enough time to shuttle leaders out of town. Today, this building serves as the US Department of Energy and is the headquarters for the Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

Today, Germantown is part bedroom community for those working in DC and part thriving urban metropolis. It has seen steady growth since the beginning of the 1980s and housing continues to be built in the area. As of 2010, the population was just under 86,400 people and is a very diverse area.

The area is a popular destination for those living in Montgomery, Howard and Baltimore Counties, as well as Washington, DC for recreation. The Black Rock Center for the Arts is one of the most popular destinations throughout the year. It is also the location of Germantown Oktoberfest, a celebratory event that features music, food and entertainment.

Another popular destination for Germantown residents and visitors is the South Germantown Recreational Park. The park is set on nearly 700 acres of land and features a driving range, a splash park, an indoor swim center, ball fields, a picnic area, an archery range, a tot lot, a pond, hiking and biking trails, tennis and basketball courts and a museum. The splash park features a massive waterfall, tumbling buckets, a water tunnel, a rain tree and  a 36 foot water maze with 280 ground-level jets.

Germantown offers a variety of shopping destinations including the Lake Forest Mall, Milestone Center and Gaithersburg Square. Lake Forest Mall is its largest mall and features more than 160 stores including Macy's, JC Penney and Lord & Taylor.

For those looking for affordable accommodations near Washington, DC or an area that is safe for families and filled with recreation, Germantown, Maryland is a great option.
