Springfield, Mass
Springfield is a city located in the southernmost central section of
Massachusetts. There are many cities named Springfield in the U.S. but
Springfield, Mass was the first. This is a city that is actually part of the
Hartford, Ct metro region. The two cities are only around 23 miles away from
each other.
The city got its start, like many New England
cities, in colonial times. Settlers were looking for more fertile land, and they
were looking for somewhere new to live, because disease was wiping out both
settler and local Indian populations. The areas along the borders were rich with
corn, and there actually was a corn trade in place. There was also meat packing
started by the city's originator, William Pynchon. This was America's first meat
packing operation for commercial sales. He also wrote a book against Puritanism,
which was the first book to be banned in the Boston area. He also launched the
first cattle drive westward.
Springfield was also one of the first places
where witchcraft was persecuted. As a matter of fact, Springfield is known
locally as the "city of first". For example, it freed the last New England
slave. It was active in supporting the abolition movement. Springfield was also
the location of the America's first sleep car for the rail road lines.
Springfield was the starting ground for the Republican political party. It was
named after a local newspaper of the day. Springfield is where the famous guns
Smith and Wesson was founded, and named after the founder of the guns. But what
Springfield is best known for, is for it being the birthplace of basketball. It
started at a local YMCA, which is now called Springfield College. Springfield is
where visitors can find the Basketball Hall Of Fame.
Springfield is known for its rich old homes, and
it's very green. It's very diverse, with regard to the population. Many people
like living here, and the streets here actually inspired the late Dr. Seuss'
first book called And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The industries
in this city are about tourism, government, medical, trade, and education. It
was and still is viewed as an economic center.
There are several fairs and festivals in
Springfield. There is the Basketball Hall Of Fame Weekend. It host awards,
galas, and other festivities honoring those associated with basketball. There is
the Hoop City Jazz Fest as well. This is a jazz fest that attracts many jazz and
R and B greats from the past, and from the present. There is a huge St.
Patrick's Day Festival Parade. For fun, there is the World's Largest Pancake
Breakfast on May 14th.
