  Checklist

  • 5 to 8 Weeks Prior To Moving — Plan. Get moving estimates in writing. Make your choice and set an appointment for moving day. You should also ask your accountant about any tax deductions you might be entitled to because of your move and find out what paperwork you need to save. Now is the time to gather important documents. Get medical records of all family members and your pets so you will have them for your new health care providers.

  • Meet with your insurance agent and find out if you need to adjust any of your policies. Make a list of all of your possessions. Order boxes. You can buy boxes online or collect them from your weekly grocery store visits. Buy all packing supplies such as markers, tape, foam peanuts, and boxes. When packing, indicate on the label for each box the room you want it to be delivered to at your new residence — this will make the movers' job simpler.

  • 2 to 4 Weeks Before You Move — Prepare for your move. Fill out change of address forms, order all utilities like electricity, phone, cable, internet, home security, etc.

  • Additionally, get rid of any flammables or poisons that cannot be moved. You should also begin to investigate what it is going to take to transfer your car registration to you new state. Be sure that you spend some time at you bank either closing or transferring your essential accounts.

  • Moving Week — Confirm the appointment with your mover. Make sure they have the correct date and time. Find out the requirements you must fulfill so they can move your belongings without incident. For example, have your deposit paid in advance and pack valuables that you are responsible for. Locate the written estimate in case any questions come up — you will have it on hand.

  • You also need to drain water hoses and defrost your refrigerator in preparation for the move. You will also want to clean the appliances before you leave.

  • Moving In — Moving out of your old home is half of the battle. Moving into your new one can be stressful as well. There are many things you need to do, but stick with the essentials at first so you don't become overwhelmed. Check to make sure the utilities are turned on and functioning properly and give the house a quick going over before bring all of your belongings inside.

  • Make sure your appliances are in proper working order. Be present when the movers arrive at your new house so you can instruct them on furniture placement and check your belongings for damage.
