Edison, NJ
Edison is a township in the central-northern
section of New Jersey. It is one of the surrounding areas that could be
considered to be a suburb of New York. It was named after the famous inventor,
Thomas Alva Edison. However, people would be surprised to know that the township
wasn't named after Edison until the 1950s, a good 20 years after his death. The
township was incorporated previously into the townships of Woodbridge and
Piscataway. It was a quiet town, like many towns in New Jersey are. The area is
known for its greenery, and for the changes of season. Like most of New Jersey,
the autumn months in particular are known for its foliage, and this makes for a
wonderful backdrop for the back to school seasons. Speaking of schools, one of
the campuses for Rutgers University is located in Edison.
Edison was names after one of its most famous
citizens, Thomas Edison. As many people know, Thomas Edison was an inventor in
the late 1800s, into the early 1900s. The amount of patents for his inventions
with regard to the sheer numbers is staggering. The inventions that Edison
created are still in use in the current 21st century, or they have been improved
upon. Their inventions were not only useful in of themselves for everyday use,
but their inventions created industries to support their use. For example,
Edison created the phonograph. This was the forerunner to the record player,
which in turn spawned the need for the "recording industry" of music. While
technology has changed the way that people listen to music, the "recording
industry" is still very much in place.
Of course, Edison is known for creating the light
bulb. The design has in large part gone untouched. There have been improvements
on the basic model, but the purpose of using electricity to create light is
something that in the 21st century is still a basic necessity. As a matter of
fact, a home would be deemed uninhabitable if there were no light sockets, or no
light bulbs to be able to light a home! Police departments, and other offices
of public safety can thank Edison for the light bulb as well. Our streets are a
lot safer to reside in, and to drive on because of them.
There are many famous residents from the township
of Edison. It is known for having a rich and diverse ethnic makeup. However in
recent years, the township has become a major residential hub for the Asian
community, both from India, and from China. As a matter of fact, there is a
shuttle bus from Edison that will take passengers to China via JFK airport in
nearby New York.
