Elizabeth, New Jersey
Elizabeth, New Jersey is located in Union County and
is the state's fourth largest city. It was included on Popular Science
magazine's notable list of "America's 50 Greenest Cities," and was the only city
in New Jersey selected. The city was
founded by English settlers in 1665, but was originally known as Elizabethtown.
It was named after the wife of Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret, who was one of
the original Proprieters of New Jersey. Elizabeth was a target during the
Revolutionary War and was the original state capital of New Jersey.
Elizabeth is home to the Singer Sewing Machine
Company, which has long been one of the area's biggest employers. Vehicle
manufacturing is another major industry in the city. It was the home of the
Electric Carriage and Wagon Company, as well as the Electric Boat Company. The
USS Holland, as well as several several A-Class Navy ships were built at
Elizabeth's Lewis Nixon's Crescent Shipyard.
The population of Elizabeth had roughly 121,000
people as of the 2000 census and has experienced consistent growth since 1990.
Residents are primarily Caucasian and Hispanic.
The city was the hometown of several notable people
including children and young adult author Judy Blume and chef, restaurateur and
television personality Tom Collichio. The majority of the population is
considered working middle class and the median income in the city is just over
$35,000.
Both residents and visitors enjoy a variety of
shopping opportunities in Elizabeth. The city is home to an Ikea furniture and
house wares store and the Jersey Gardens Mall, featuring Saks, Old Navy, the Gap
and Banana Republic. The mall is also home to an AMC Movie Theatre featuring 20
screens. It is New Jersey's largest theatre. The mall is right in the heart of
Elizabeth and is surrounded by views of the Newark/Elizabeth Seaport, St.
Patrick's Church and the Singer Sewing Building.
Midtown is the historic part of the city where
visitors will find a shopping area, the Elizabeth Public Library, the First
Presbyterian Church, the Union County Courthouse and St. John's Episcopal
Church. Midtown is also home to the Hersh Tower, an Art Deco structure built
during the Great Depression, as well as the Ritz Theatre, Boxwood Hall and the
city's 9/11 monument. Elizabeth's oldest building, the Bonnell House, is located
in Midtown and can be toured by appointment.
There are several hotels in Elizabeth and since the
city is near the Newark Liberty Airport, it is a convenient destination for New
Jersey travelers. Visitors can choose from affordable options such as the
Hamptom Inn or the Country Inn and Suites by Carlson or luxury hotels such as
the Hilton, the Sheraton Four Points or the Wyndham Neward Airport.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy the annual
festivals and special events held in the town each year. The Elizabeth Latin
Carnival is held in early September and attracts more than half a million
people. The city also hosts a bike tour each year, the Tour De Elizabeth, which
winds riders through the entire city. Other special events held in town include
Pride Day, Portugal Day and Julyfest.
