Jersey City, NJ
Jersey City, New Jersey is the state's second
largest city and one of the top 100 largest cities in the United States. The
city is considered part of New York's metropolitan area and is located between
the Upper New York Bay and the Hudson River. The skyline of Lower Manhattan is
visible from Jersey City. The port of Jersey City is one of the most important
in the country. Exporting, importing, manufacturing and industry have all played
an important role in the growth of the state.
The area was originally home to the Lenape or
Delaware Indians. In 1623, the area became a Dutch province and a portion of the
land was later purchased from the Lenape. Over time, the relationship with the
natives deteriorated and violence was a regular occurrence. The City of Jersey
was incorporated in 1820 and then reincorporated in 1829 and 1838. It was during
this last phase of incorporation that Jersey City was given its name and became
an independent city. In 1870, following the Civil War, Jersey City, Bergen City
and Hudson City were blended into one municipality to unite the area of Hudson
County.
The city was a popular destination for immigrants
and as such, is home to many Italian, Irish and German families. The city began
to experience urban decline in the 1970s, as well as civil unrest, corruption
and crime. The population dropped between 1950 and 1980, but has seen a steady
incline since then. The 2010 population was recorded as just less than 250,000.
The city is considered one of the most ethnically diverse in the United States
and is home to the country's largest Egyptian Coptic community, as well as a
large Kenyan community.
There have been successful efforts to develop the
waterfront area into a tourist attraction. The area is now home to several
high-rise buildings, as well as the city's financial district. Citibank, Chase
Bank, Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch all have offices along the waterfront. A
public transportation light-rail line was also developed in the area.
The city offers a variety of entertainment and
culture venues for residents and visitors to enjoy. Jersey City is home to
several movie theatres including the AMC Loew's Newport Center 11, the Loew's
Jersey Theatre and the Regal Hudson Cinemas. Liver entertainment is featured at
the Repertory Dance Theater. There are also several galleries in the city
including Art House Productions, the Curious Matter Gallery, the Harold B.
Lemmerman Gallery and 58 Gallery.
In addition to theatres and galleries, the city
offers a variety of cultural destinations. These include the Apple Tree House,
the Afro-American Museum, the Jersey City Museum, the Barrow Mansion and the
Liberty Science Center. Visitors can also enjoy trips to Ellis Island.
The city is home to 60 parks, providing visitors and
residents a chance to enjoy the fresh air and open spaces. Lincoln Park and
Liberty State Park are the two largest in the area. Liberty State Park
features more than 1,200 acres of land offering opportunities for biking,
hiking, picnicking, fishing, crabbing or sightseeing. It also has a rich wetlands area that is a sanctuary for
fish, birds and other wildlife, including the great snowy owl.
