Newark, NJ
Newark is a city in New Jersey that is located in
the northeast of the state. It's a port city that is a part of the New York city
metropolitan area. The Holland tunnel actually connects Newark, New Jersey, with
downtown New York City. It's the tunnel that is referred to by New Yorkers when
they talk about the "bridge and tunnel crowd".
The city itself was founded in 1666 by Puritans
that came down from Connecticut. The city through the centuries developed into a
port city, and into an industrial area. It's very much an urban area. There are
areas that are still blighted, yet there are area that are experiencing
gentrification.
The city has rebounded from political troubles
and from racial riots and tensions in the sixties and seventies. There are many
venues for the arts for entertainment. For example, there is the Newark Museum.
This is the largest museum in the entire state of New Jersey. People can
also visit the Newark Public Library, which is a very large structure. There is
the Museum for African American Music, which is an offshoot of the Smithsonian
museum, which is based in Washington D.C. This is very appropriate, because two
African American music legends call Newark home. They are Dionne Warwickand
Whitney Houston. As a matter of fact, these two music legends are cousins!
There are arenas that are located in Newark that
house professional sports teams. For example, the Prudential center host the New
Jersey Nets, the professional basketball team for the NBA. There is also the New
Jersey Devils, who are a NHL team. Newark is also home to one of the airports
that serves the New York metropolitan area. Newark Liberty International
Airport.
Newark is a city that is undergoing a lot of
changes and that is seeking to diminish its reputation for corruption and crime.
For many years, Newark earned the reputation of being a very crime-ridden city.
This caused many of its inhabitants to flee for other, more suburban areas of
New Jersey. However, there are many neighborhoods and areas in Newark that are
receiving a revival of sorts and a makeover. This is because the city leaders
want to attract visitors and tourism. The city leaders want to continue to
attract large business and entertainment venues that help to fund the city.
As mentioned, the city is very close to New York
City. This means that people who live in the area are able to take trains or
their vehicles into New York, to experience the venues that this city has to
offer. Then again, the New Jersey shore is a short drive away. Many people go to
family friendly beaches along the Jersey Shore, or they go to the gambling
mecca, Atlantic City.
