Paterson, New Jersey is an interesting place to visit. It is the third largest city in the state, and located a short 12 miles from Manhattan. Many diverse ethnic groups call Paterson home, including African Americans, Italian Americans, Hispanics, and the southern portion of the city has the largest Turkish-American population in the US.

Patterson was the very first planned industrial city in the nation and began its life in 1791 as the Paterson falls provided power for the many industries that made their home here. It even gained recognition as the silk city because of its production of silk in the 1800s. However, its success began to wane during the 1960s and 1970s.

Paterson is home to 149,222 people living in 44,710 households, 33,353 of those families live in the city. Each square mile of Paterson has an average of 5,587.2 housing units.

When traveling to Paterson, it is easy get there by way or Route 80 as well as Route 4, and the Main Line run also stops in Paterson. Once there you will not have to worry about transportation because even though it is a small city it has numerous bus lines that make frequent stops throughout the city. This city serves as a major transit hub for Passaic County and all of North Jersey. That means that even if you are not traveling by car you will still be able to get around.

The Paterson waterfall is the tallest in New Jersey, and the second largest in volume east of the Mississippi River, losing out to Niagara Falls. As a national historic phenomenon, you just have to see the falls. The Great Falls District is home to what is now a State Park encompassing the waterfall.

For the night life lover, there are a good many night clubs to visit in Paterson. You might want to visit downtown Paterson while you are there, and the bus system has many dollar bus options to choose from to make your trips back and forth more economical. The train station can be found on Market Street.

People’s Park is a popular area of the city and located near 21st Avenue and south of Market Street. This primarily Italian and Spanish neighborhood has a variety of restaurants and shops to peruse throughout the day. Restaurants include Peruvian, Dominican, Columbian, and Italian fare which is sure to treat the taste buds.

Lakeview is located in the sixth ward of the city and is home to middle class families. You can browse through the Paterson Farmers Market which by the way is one of the largest in the state of New Jersey, and located close to Railroad Avenue. For fresh produce and meat you cannot go wrong when getting a real taste of what Paterson life is all about.

Don’t forget to visit Belle Vista when you are in Paterson. You will find Lambert castle there which was built in 1892 by the self-made owner of what became the prominent silk mill of Patterson in days gone by. After the death of Catholina Lambert, the home was bought by the city and then sold to Passaic County. The county used it as administrative offices but in 1936 gave a room of the old home to the new Passaic County Historical Society. The museum has grown to encompass the entire first floor and is now the Historical Museum.
