Trenton, New Jersey

Trenton is the capital of the state of New Jersey. The city got its start in 1719 officially, but the Quakers inhibited the area as early as 1679. The Quakers were a religious Christian group that had to flee England due to religious persecution. Several religious groups fled to the New World to build new lives and to practice their religion as they saw fit.

Trenton was one of the many battlegrounds during the American Revolutionary War.  Washington gave the revolution its first victory at Trenton, which is located alongside the Delaware River. The Delaware River separates New Jersey from Pennsylvania. It flows from the northern region of the two states and the mouth of the river separates Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. At one point in the history of Trenton, the leaders of the revolution were going to make it the capital city of the United States. However, eventually a city in Virginia was chosen. Of course, we know that area today as Washington D.C.

The city of Trenton grew with immigration. They helped to create the pottery industry, which is still very popular in New Jersey. They also worked in the various mills and later on, in the factories. Central and Northern New Jersey is known for being an industrial area. As a matter of fact, the motto of the city that was created at the turn of the 20th century, is "Trenton makes, the world takes".  The motto still hangs on the sides of the Lower Trenton Bridge. The city was known at that time for its production of cigars, wire ropes, rubber products and ceramics. Trenton lost some of its status as a manufacturing hub because the big manufacturers went out of business. However, since it is the capital city of New Jersey, it is known for government. Many state agency headquarters are based in Trenton, so many people flock to the area to work for the state.

Trenton is the location of two colleges, which are Mercer County Community College and Edison State College. There are other colleges and universities in the surrounding areas. There are as a matter of fact many great universities and colleges located in the surrounding areas. Since New Jersey is a small state, many world renowned colleges and universities can be found within half an hours travel from Trenton.

The cultural makeup of Trenton reflects the two major metropolitan areas that the city is located by. The city is in the middle of New Jersey. Therefore, there is Philadelphia, PA to the southwest. There is New York City to the Northeast. However, Trenton is included in the New York City metropolitan area. The city tends to have a little more New York City sensibilities as a matter of fact. Since both cities are around an hour away from Trenton, the locals can experience tons of culture and the nightlife that both world-class cities have to offer.
