Albany, New York
Albany started being settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, and was discovered by
Henry Hudson. He was actually looking for faster trade routes, exploring a river
from Manhattan North, and this now famous river was named after him. By the
middle of the century, almost 10,000 Dutch had settled here, then named Fort
Orange. They had a lot of influence here, and Albany actually played an
important part in the communications route for the Iroquois Indians, the French
as well as the English in the early development of our country. During the
spring, the Annual Tulip Festival held in the historical Washington Park,
celebrates this heritage.
As of last year's census, Albany proper had a population of almost 98,000
people, with an estimated 857,000 in the metropolitan area. It snows in the
winter, pretty heavily at times, and this area does have four distinct seasons.
It gets around 39" of rain each year. In the summer months, it averages around
80 degrees; however, it has been known to hit the hundreds. During the winter,
temperatures in the thirties are about average, but there have been record lows
of minus eleven degrees.
There are numerous Albany attractions, and it really depends on the time of
year. In the summer months, there are the Dutch Apple Cruises, where you can get
tours of the Hudson River, with meals, entertainment and much more. Six Flags
has a theme park, with Splashwater Kingdom. The Altamont winery and vineyard is
also open, with a wine tasting room, as well as numerous paths and stunning
views.
If you are interested in the rich culture of this city, a visit to the Albany
Heritage Visitor's Center and Quakenbush Square is definitely a place to stop.
Here you will find among other things the Quakenbush House, one of the oldest
historical buildings in the city. Named after the Quakenbush family, they called
this their home for almost 150 years. It is one of the oldest examples of Dutch
architecture in Albany. While there are not interior tours, there are walking
tours of the outside of the building.
Situated near the Ten Broek Mansion, and more than one hundred fifty years old,
the St. Joseph's Church served the Irish Community until 1993. Now it is being
restored, and is open to tours. This is one of the largest representations of
Gothic church structures and is a National Historical site. You can book a tour
with the Albany Historical Foundation.
Another site to see is just a short two-hour drive north, in the heart of the
Adirondacks, is the Adirondack Museum. This museum is dedicated to the people
the wildlife, and the rich history of this area. It has been accredited by the
American Association of Museums four times, the last in 2010. It has been open
to the public for many decades, and its history begins back in the 1880s. If you
have a chance, this museum should be one of the places to visit.
There are many more fascinating attractions in and around Albany. If you need
more information about these, there are a number of different websites. You can
find out about the accommodations in the area, where to eat and much of the
nightlife that this exciting city has to offer visitors.
