Located in the western part of New York, Buffalo hugs the eastern shores of Lake Erie along with the beginning point of the Niagara River. From this populous city that is second in size to only New York City, the shores of Fort Erie, Ontario can be seen. A bustling health and educational metropolis, there is a total of 52.5 square miles, 40.6 that are land.

The history of settlers in Buffalo began around 1804 when the small town began growing due to the waterways that were used for travel and transporting of goods. By 1832, when the city was incorporated, there was a population of approximately 10,000 people. The Erie Canal brought a period of prosperity to the area during World War II but the St. Lawrence Seaway was built in 1957 and drove the trade routes away from Buffalo.

The weather in Buffalo is known for cold and windy winters due to the precipitation delivered from the Great Lakes. Cold air crosses the warm lake waters and creates a cold and wet downward wind. From the first of November through March, snow is a common sight. Summertime is a great time for Buffalo with lots of sunshine mixed with humidity. The city is considered one of the driest and sunniest spots of the Northeast but has significant rainfall to keep everything lush and green.

The economy of Buffalo took a large hit when traffic was rerouted around the city. Manufacturers had to find other ways of transporting goods and many moved to more convenient areas of the state. The city is nowhere near the prosperity that was once enjoyed but has found ways to bring back a secure employment base. The University at Buffalo, Kaleida Health and HSBC Bank USA are among the top employers along with the state and federal government.

Immigrants of German, Polish and Italian were the first to migrate to the city of Buffalo and many descendants still reside in the city. Other nationalities include Latino, Somalia and Asian. A large Jewish community exists in North Buffalo and the west side. A proud cultural group, the residents and city government have worked hard to redefine an ailing city and in 2001, was named "friendliest city" by USA Today. They have also won the All-America City Award twice.

Aside from Niagara Falls that brings thousands of visitors to the area each year, Buffalo has great architecture, music and art. The Buffalo Japanese Garden is manicured to perfection and over 80 sites are included in the National Register of Historic Places. Both summer and winter offer festivals that are worth coming to the city of Buffalo for. Concerts, theater, Italian food and art surround the parks in the summer while winter delivers the Buffalo Powder Keg Festival and Labatt Blue Pond Hockey.
