It came into the control of the British in 1664, when it was renamed New York, to honor the Duke of York, when the lands were granted to him by his brother, the king of England. 

In 1785, New York became the capital of the United States, and remained so until the middle of 1790, a fact which many people do not know. Since 1790 New York, New York has been the largest city in the United States, remaining so for more than 200 years.
