Syracuse is the fifth most populous city in New York State, with a population of over 145,000 in the city and over 740,000 in its greater metropolitan area. The city is a major hub in central New York, as it features educational institutions and economic opportunities, including Syracuse University, which is a major research center. Syracuse is also well-known as a city that hosts numerous conventions every year at its convention complex. The city is growing quickly and will continue to be a major center in the state of New York.

The land around Syracuse was originally inhabited by the Iroquois, as they settled in the area about 5000 years before the Europeans. The French arrived in the area in the 1600 and attempted to overtake the Iroquois, which spawned a great deal of violence. In the early 1700s, the British started arriving in Syracuse and they befriended the Iroquois people. During the American Revolution, the Iroquois in this area held importance, as both the British and American forces wanted their support. In 1824, the first permanent settlers arrived and the city was incorporated in 1825.

The climate in Syracuse varies, although the region is known for its heavy winter snowfalls. On average, about 121 inches falls per year, which is the most out of any major city in the United States. The temperatures increase greatly in the summer months, as the city has an average monthly temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit in July. The humidity also makes it feel hotter than it actually is, which frequently leads to days that feel like they are over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Syracuse is a diverse city, although almost 65% of the population is white. An additional 25 percent of the population is African American, with Native Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders making up the rest of the population. Hispanic people of any race make up about 5% of the population. Only 8% of the people in the city are foreign-born, which is much less than the 20% average in the rest of New York. The median household income is $25,000, which is far below the national average. It should be noted, however, that Syracuse does have a lower cost of living than many other places in New York.

When you visit Syracuse, make sure that you visit the State Tower Building, which is the tallest building in the city. Checking out the various neighborhoods in the city should also be a priority, as areas like downtown, Eastwood, Little Italy, University Hill and Westcott all have their own attractions. The downtown and Westcott areas have the best nightlife, as well as numerous shopping destinations. If you are into sports, you can visit the city to see some minor league action. The Syracuse Chiefs are the International League affiliate of MLB's Washington Nationals, while the Syracuse Crunch is affiliated with the NHL's Anaheim Ducks. The Syracuse University Orange plays in the Big East Conference and has produced numerous NFL and NBA players.
