Yonkers, NY

Yonkers is considered to be the most highly populated city in the Westchester County as of 2010, and the fourth most populous in the state of New York. The city is located at the banks of the majestic Hudson River and is famous for its legendary Yonkers Racetrack.

History

The area where Yonkers stands today was actually a part of a 24,000-acre land grant given by New Netherland Director-General Adriaen van der Donck. The land grant begins at the Manhattan-Bronx border extending all the way down to the Bronx River. The city actually got its name from Van der Donck who was locally known as Jonker (which means young gentleman).

For over two centuries, Yonkers was predominantly a farming town with small industries scattered around its borders. Eventually, these industries prospered, grew and became a major economic driver in the area for many years. Yonkers was officially chartered as a city in 1872.

During the first part of the 20th century, the city hosted the Colt Runabout Company, an automobile maker that specialized on 2-seater, long hooded vehicles which were very popular during the early 1900s. However, despite the company's impressive performance in the market, it closed down after several years of operation.

Yorkers was once home to the country's largest hat making company, the Waring Hat Company. However, most of Yonkers' manufacturing industries declined after cheaper imported products started entering the country.

Aside from its once-booming manufacturing industry, the city is also known for the role it played in the development of the US entertainment business. In 1888, the country's very first golf course was constructed by Scottish immigrant, John Reid. The first ever FM radio broadcast was also transmitted from the city by local resident, Edwin Howard Armstrong, in January of 1940.

Yonkers is remembered for having one of the longest and the most controversial racial discrimination case in country. The case spanned for several decades and was finally closed in 1985 which ended the Yonkers' 40-year racial segregation struggle.

Geography and Climate

Yonkers is located at the eastern part of the Hudson River, occupying 20.3 square miles of land area. The town is bordered by the Bronx River to the east, the Hudson River to the west, Greenburgh to the north and Woodlawn, Riverdale, Wakefield and parts of the Bronx to the south.

Temperature in the city can range from 27 degrees during January to 84 degrees Fahrenheit during the months of July. Winters are generally cold and summers are comfortably warm.

Population

According to the 2010 national census, there are 195,976 people residing in the city, with a population density of 10,827.4 people per square mile. Yonkers is predominantly populated by Whites and African Americans with a few Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Irish and Pacific Islander minorities.

Modernization

A modernization project was proposed to answer to the city's need for economic improvement and to increase the city's tourism. The project promises to add retail and commercial spaces, waterfront development and luxury housing. The project is worth over $3 billion and is considered to be one of the largest development projects in the New York Metropolitan Area.
