What is a Terms of Service document?

A Terms of Service (TOS) document outlines the terms and conditions of an electric or natural gas plan. This document outlines the agreement between you and your energy supplier regarding key details of your plan, including price, contract length, billing, and other terms.

As an energy consumer, you can use this document to fully understand the features of an energy plan before signing up. To find a plan’s TOS, enter your ZIP code on our marketplace and click “more details” under the plan name.

Main sections included in your TOS

All energy plans contain a TOS, which you can conveniently view on our marketplace before signing up for a plan. Although these documents vary across providers, there are typically a few main components you’ll find. Review this information when determining if a plan is a good fit for you.

  1. Price: This section explains that you agree to pay your energy company for your energy supply.
  2. Term: Energy contracts can last anywhere from a few months to multiple years. Be sure to review this section to confirm the duration of your plan commitment.
  3. Rate structure: Your rate or price structure explains whether you have a fixed or variable rate. This section also lists your energy charges, which may include a base charge and a charge per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy consumed.
  4. Renewal: If you have a fixed-rate plan, you will receive a renewal notice before your contract expiration with the option to renew. You must respond to accept or decline, or your service may be switched.
  5. Early termination of contract: Most energy suppliers charge a fee if you cancel your energy plan early. If your plan contains an early termination fee (ETF), it will be outlined in this portion of the TOS.
  6. Billing and payment information: Your monthly energy bill comes from your utility company, not your energy supplier. Your bill will include a due date and recommended payment methods.
  7. Contact information: Your TOS contains the main contact methods for your energy supplier.
  8. Renewable energy: Many energy plans contain renewable energy sources. Many TOS documents state how much renewable energy is included with your plan.

How to know if a plan is a good match

Finding a plan that aligns with your energy needs can help you achieve manageable energy costs. Here are a few key aspects to consider when choosing an energy plan:

  • Average energy usage: Energy plans often have tiered rate structures, which offer varying rates based on your energy usage. Review your past energy bills to determine your typical usage and find a plan that offers a good deal for your consumption level.
  • Term length: Carefully consider how long you want to commit to an energy plan. Long-term plans can offer more savings and stability if you can commit to a one- to three-year contract. However, a short-term plan may be a better fit if your housing is in transition and you need flexibility.
  • Plan features: Additional features, such as renewable energy, are available on our marketplace. Consider which plan details matter the most to you.

Terms of Service FAQs

Can I cancel my plan at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your energy plan at any time, but you may incur an early cancellation fee if you are under contract. Check your TOS to learn if you owe a fee for cancelling early. Suppliers often waive this fee if you are moving and they do not operate in your new area.

What happens when my contract ends?

Your provider will offer you a new plan and rate during the renewal period, which is typically 30–45 days prior to your contract ending. You must decline this offer if you do not wish to renew; otherwise, your provider may automatically change your agreement.

Will my energy rate change at renewal?

Your energy rate may change at renewal depending on what your supplier offers. If you don’t want to renew your plan, you can shop for a new plan on our free marketplace. Explore affordable rates by entering your ZIP code or calling our energy team.
