For business

Compare electricity and natural gas providers

In regulated energy markets, residents are limited to receiving their electricity from one company. Conversely, a deregulated electricity or natural gas market gives you the power to choose your provider. Deregulation means residents and business owners can select which company supplies their electricity and compare and choose their energy plan from multiple options.

The Choose Energy marketplace can help you sort through the companies and plans in your area and easily compare your options. Enter your ZIP code to explore available electric providers and current energy rates in your area. Once you’ve found a plan that fits your needs, you can sign up in minutes through our free marketplace.

Currently, 17 states and the District of Columbia offer some type of energy deregulation, whether it’s electricity, natural gas, or both. Explore which states are deregulated and learn more about the energy providers serving deregulated areas.

What’s the difference between providers and utility companies?

The Choose Energy marketplace can point you in the direction of electricity, natural gas, green energy, or solar power options. Before comparing available options, you should know the difference between energy providers and utility companies.

  • Energy providers: Also called suppliers, retail energy providers (REPs), or energy service companies (ESCOs). You may see various terms to describe an energy supplier depending on your location. Providers sell you the energy that powers your home or business. In deregulated areas, providers compete for business by buying wholesale energy and offering customers lower rates than local utilities.
  • Utility companies: Utilities deliver electricity to your home or business and are responsible for maintaining power lines and infrastructure. Unlike your provider, you can’t choose your utility. Instead, utility companies are assigned based on where you live. Have an outage or other power emergency? Contact your utility — not your supplier.
