Just Energy review

Choose Energy score: 2.1 out of 5

Shopping for a deregulated energy plan can seem overwhelming. With the sheer number of potential energy providers, many find it difficult to narrow down their options. Choose Energy wants to help empower consumers to find the right electricity plan at an affordable rate.

To ensure that our customers are able to choose a great energy provider, Choose Energy compiled a scoring model to review top electric providers in Texas. The Choose Energy reviews model is based on unbiased and quantitative criteria to ensure provider scores remain objective.

We’ve broken down our scoring model into three main categories: customer service, online accessibility and business history. These categories contain the following items:

  • Customer service
  • Online accessibility
  • Business history

Using these criteria, Choose Energy assigns impartial reviews to top electricity providers in Texas. To learn more about electric provider reviews, see our full list here.

Customer service: 0.5 out of 5

  • P2C Complaint score: 1
  • Satisfaction Guarantee: 0

The customer service score is made up of a satisfaction guarantee and the P2C complaint score from the Public Utility Commission of Texas scorecard, here. A low complaint score and the lack of a satisfaction guarantee combine to hurt Just Energy in this category.

Online accessibility: 3.3 out of 5

  • Online bill pay: 5
  • Online chat: 0
  • Access to usage alerts & trends: 5

The online accessibility factors were assessed on a yes or no basis. Just Energy offers customers both online bill pay and usage alerts, but does not have an online chat feature, lowering its overall category score.

Business history: 2.5 out of 5

  • Years in business: 5
  • Better Business Bureau accreditation: 0

Just Energy has a lengthy track record in the deregulated energy business, earning the company a 5 for years in business. However, the company faltered under Better Business accreditation, which it lacks. The BBB is a paid accreditation but we have included it here as a measure of trustworthiness and brand awareness.

Texas electricity rates FAQ

Types of energy plans

The two main types of energy plans you will see on the Choose Energy marketplace are fixed and variable rate plans.

  • Fixed rate plan. The rate you pay for your energy usage is set in your contract and does not change.
  • Variable rate plan. The rate you pay is tied to the state’s electricity market and fluctuates throughout your contract

Rate structures vary within these types of plans. For example, one fixed rate plan may include a rate structure that fits your needs better than a different fixed rate plan. For a more detailed explanation of plan structures, see our energy buying guide.

Credit checks and no deposit plans

Credit checks are a normal part of the energy buying process and are required before providers will offer you service. Depending on your credit, some providers will require a deposit. We’ll let you know when you shop for plans whether you will need to pay a deposit. There are also a few plans that do not require a credit check or a deposit. For more information, see our deposits page.

Switching electricity providers

Switching to a different provider does not have to be a difficult process. If you have a variable electricity plan, you can switch providers at any point. If you have a fixed plan, you may be required to pay an early termination fee. To avoid this, switch up to 14 days before your contract ends. Here’s a quick breakdown of how switching works:

  1. Enter your ZIP code. We’ll show you rates in your area to compare to your current one.
  2. Choose a plan. Sign up over the phone or online. You’ll get a confirmation email and we’ll take it from there.
  3. Enjoy your new rate. Your new provider will handle the switch. There is no need to cancel with your old provider.

Moving electric service

If you move before your contract term ends, you will not be charged an early termination fee. This allows you to remain with your current provider or switch to a new one. You can shop for new plans up to 90 days before you move. Most homes are installed with a smart meter, which means your service will be activated remotely without a visit from a technician. To learn more, see our movers page.
