About TXU Energy

With roots dating back to 1882, TXU Energy became a certified retail supplier shortly after deregulation. Today, the company is the largest residential retail electric provider in the state of Texas. TXU Energy electric rates are highly competitive, and plans include novel options like solar power and “free pass” days. TXU Energy reviews are consistently strong across a variety of criteria.

Texas deregulated its energy market in 2002, so you have the power to choose from several retail energy suppliers and rate plans. You may be able to lower your electric rate by switching providers, but you will need to take a close look at the different options to make the right choice for your home.

TXU Energy plans

Smart Edge 12

This traditional fixed-rate plan locks in your electricity-supply rates for 12 months. Every month that you use 800 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity or more, you will get a $30 credit on your bill. But if you end your contract ahead of schedule, you will owe $150 in early termination fees, unless you are moving out.

Texas Choice 24

This 24-month fixed-rate plan locks in your rates for a full two years. You will also receive 3% cashback rewards. If you need to end your contract for reasons other than a move, though, you will owe an early termination fee of $295.

Free Nights and Solar Days 12 (8 p.m.)

If you want to try to reduce spending while going green, this may be the plan for you. Get 100% solar power during the day, and all your usage after 8 p.m. is free. If you want to end your contract before 12 months have elapsed, and you are not moving out, you will owe an early termination fee of $150.

Free Pass 24

On this 24-month fixed-rate plan, your seven days of highest power usage each month are free. You also get two bonus free days per month in the summer. An early termination fee of $295 will apply if you end your contract ahead of schedule, except if you’re moving.

Texas energy plan FAQs

  • Who do I call about an outage? One confusing thing about deregulation is that your utility company delivers service and maintains infrastructure, but you buy your power from your provider. If the power goes out, call your utility company, not TXU Energy.
  • What is a fixed-rate energy plan? On a fixed-rate energy plan, your electricity-supply rates will remain the same throughout your contract outside of taxes. However, if you end your contract early, you must pay an early termination fee.
  • What is a variable-rate energy plan? A variable-rate energy plan doesn’t require a long-term contract, but your rates are based on wholesale energy prices. They could go up as the market changes, making it difficult to plan for how much you will owe.
  • Why does ChooseEnergy.com need a credit check? Unless you choose a prepaid, no deposit plan, your energy deposit will vary by credit score.

A few things to remember

Don’t skip the Electricity Facts Label. This provides vital information such as:

  • Per kilowatt-hour rate (may depend on usage)
  • Percent of included renewable energy
  • Early termination fees

Enjoy hassle-free supplier setup: Just place your order and your new supplier will take over. There should be no power interruptions during the switchover.

Get to know your electricity bill: Your utility company, or transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP), delivers power to your home. Your utility fees are listed separately from the rates from your supplier.
