Torrance energy deregulation

In the mid-1980s, the California legislature voted to deregulate the residential natural gas market. This meant that consumers were no longer tied prices set by their local utility. Under deregulation, consumers can now choose to buy from third party suppliers, who set their own rates and service levels for natural gas. Having competing suppliers in the marketplace helps keep cost lower, which is a great benefit to the consumer.

Torrance utility companies & energy providers

Before deregulation, utility companies produced, transmitted, and set the pricing and services for energy. Under deregulation, the local utility still produces and physically transmits the natural gas, but the suppliers now manage pricing and service. In Torrance — and throughout Southern California — the Southern California Gas Company provides natural gas to the deregulated market, with capacity as high as 153 MMcf/day in 2013. Choose Energy works with Pacific Gas and Electric Company as well.

Choose Energy works with the top energy providers. In Torrance, those providers are Commerce EnergySpark Energy, and XOOM Energy.

Torrance renewable energy

California has consistently been a leader in the field of renewable energy. In 2010, a total of 28.8 percent of the energy produced (approximately58,881,000 megawatt hours) was produced using renewable energy. In that same year, about 24.4 percent of the state’s total capacity (about 16,460 megawatts) was produced using renewable energy. In Torrance, Choose Energy’s green energy partner is Spark Energy.
