The refrigerator recycling program can motivate customers to buy more efficient appliances.

Xcel Energy is offering Texans $50 in rebates with the refrigerator recycling program. Through the end of the year, Xcel Energy customers can recycle old refrigerators and freezers in an attempt to save money and reduce power usage.

“If you own an older, less efficient freezer or refrigerator, now is a good time to think about replacing it because new units use about half as much electricity as older ones,” explained Bryan Whitson, manager of efficiency programs for Xcel Energy. “When you combine these savings with the benefits of other efficiency programs such as LED lighting, you can see real savings on monthly electric bills.”

Refrigerator recycling began in Amarillo in 2018 and has only recently opened up to all Xcel Energy customers. The recycling service is provided by ARCA, Inc., which has been responsibly recycling refrigerators and freezers for 30 years.

Requirements to participate in the refrigerator recycling program

Xcel Energy outlines the requirements on the company website:

  • Be an Xcel Energy residential electric customer
  • Have an account number
  • Own an operational 7.75-30 cubic foot refrigerator or freezer, which will be picked up from the address on the customer account

Steps to recycle your refrigerator

For those interested in participating in the refrigerator recycling program, following are the steps listed on the Xcel Energy website:

  1. Make an appointment to have your refrigerator picked up for free. Call 888-564-7003 or schedule a time online. Customers will receive a $50 check.
  2. Plug in the refrigerator or freezer the night before the scheduled pickup date. The unit must demonstrate full operational capability before it will be accepted. This means it must be able to cool or freeze adequately.
  3. The refrigerator or freezer will be recycled by Xcel Energy for free.
  4. The rebate check will be mailed to the customer within four weeks of the pickup date.
