Finding the cheapest electricity plans

The first step in finding a great energy plan is figuring out what a good price is for you. Are you simply looking for the cheapest option? Do you want a long-term contract or a month-to-month option? What is your average usage level, and how much are you willing to spend on your energy bill each month?

Remember, some great electricity deals don’t seem that great once you factor in usage. Because of the tiered usage prices offered by most providers, a low rate when using 2,000 kilowatt-hours per month doesn’t look so low if you go over or under that level of consumption. On the contrary, some providers charge a hidden usage fee if you don’t meet the minimum energy consumption for that plan.

Be sure to read and understand each plan’s Electricity Facts Label to get an accurate idea of the plan you’re considering before you sign up. Enter your ZIP code on our free Choose Energy marketplace to find and compare available plans in your area.

How are my rates calculated?

Figuring out how your monthly energy rates are calculated can seem confusing. Thankfully, you can find your approximate monthly cost starting with this simple formula:

Monthly Usage (kWh) x Electric Rates ($/kWh) = Approximate Cost per Month

For example, if your household uses an average of 1,200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) each month and your electric rate is 9.8 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.098/kWh), your estimated cost will be $117.60 per month – plus or minus any usage discounts or upcharges.

Then, be sure to factor in your utility company’s monthly delivery charge and any usage charges for failing to meet any tiered threshold for the most accurate estimates.

Bottom line: Hidden fees and requirements can make a seemingly good deal not so great. Sometimes, the best electricity deals out there might be working with your family to reduce your electricity usage rather than looking for promotions.
