New Jersey price to compare

The price to compare (PTC) is the default energy rate set by your local utility company. PTC might also appear as the Standard Offer Service (SOS). If you don’t sign up for a plan with an energy provider in your area, you’ll automatically be enrolled in a standard energy plan with your utility at the PTC rate. Here are New Jersey’s PTC rates in cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for electricity and cents per therm for natural gas.

Types of energy plans in New Jersey

When shopping for electricity in New Jersey, you’ll notice a few different types of plans. These are the most common options you’ll find on our marketplace.

  • Fixed-rate plans: With fixed-rate plans, your New Jersey electric rate stays the same for the duration of your contract, which usually lasts anywhere from six months to three years. These plans are ideal for shoppers who want long-term stability and predictable bills. Note that these plans typically charge an early termination fee (ETF) if you end your contract early.
  • Variable-rate plans: Your energy rate can change monthly based on the wholesale cost of electricity. You may get a cheap rate when demand is low, but your rate will spike when demand goes up. This plan type is best suited to shoppers who need short-term flexibility, because you can cancel at any time without penalty.
  • Renewable energy plans: Many energy providers offer electric and gas plans powered by green energy sources, including wind energy and solar power. You can find the percentage of green energy included in a plan in the Terms of Service (TOS). Enter your ZIP code on this page and use the “green energy” filter to find renewable energy plans in your area.
