COVID-19 has impacted the energy industry.

(Updated April 9, 2020)

Across the country, Americans have felt the impacts of the COVID-19 virus. White House officials and experts at the CDC have urged citizens to practice social distancing – remaining at home in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Energy providers in Texas and across the country are working to help customers.

On Thursday, the Public Utility Commission of Texas agreed to create a temporary emergency fund to help Texans affected by COVID-19 pay their electricity bills. The commission also decided to stop providers from disconnecting service to residents who have lost jobs and income due to the coronavirus precautions for at least six months.

Earlier, the Texas Supreme Court halted eviction proceedings until April 19.

As of March 19, the Texas Supreme Court suspended all eviction proceedings statewide until April 19. On March 26, the Texas Public Utility Commission voted to ban utilities from shutting down power and water service to residents who have lost jobs and income due to COVID-19 actions for at least six months. (Click here for FAQs about PUCT’s relief program.)

But while it provides immediate relief to Texans worried about keeping their lights on and taps running as they face layoffs and blunted incomes, the order that the three-member commission approved unanimously does not provide direct assistance to utility customers, who will still be on the hook for their bills.

About 95 percent of homes in Texas are equipped with smart meters, meaning you do not need a technician to come to your home for you to switch providers.

Choose Energy® wants to help suppliers get the word out about how they’re helping. We’ll update this list to reflect responses from providers that want to help:
