How has deregulation affected Rowlett?
Here’s what the latest statistics from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show:
- Texas residential electricity rates are nearly 9.5 percent lower than the national average.
- Texas commercial electricity rates are nearly 26 percent lower than the national average.
- Texas industrial electricity rates are nearly 23 percent lower than the national average.
- Texas generates the most electricity of any state from wind.
- Texas generates the fifth-highest amount of electricity from solar energy.
In the days of energy regulation, utility companies had a monopoly on their individual parts of the state. Residents were required to purchase and energy plan with their area’s utility company, and the company could set the rate at whatever they wanted.
All that changed in 2002 when the state legislature passed a bill to deregulate a majority of the state’s energy market. This opened the market to competition among providers, driving down costs for consumers. Today, Rowlett residents shop for an energy plan much like anything else, comparing plans, rates, and providers to find the option that suits their needs.
Rowlett utility companies & energy providers
Since utility companies no longer sell energy plans, they operate a little differently. Retail electric providers sell plans to residents and coordinate with the utility company to set up service. The utility company delivers the energy to the home and maintains power lines and other infrastructure. If you experience a power outage, call the utility company, not your retail electric provider.
The utility company for Rowlett is Oncor Electric Delivery, which manages the energy grid for 402 cities across the Lone Star State. Meanwhile, residents can purchase plans with a number of providers. Since there are so many to choose from it can be hard to know who to trust, so Choose Energy has partnered with a few of the most trusted, such as Just Energy, Reliant Energy, and Cirro Energy.
Rowlett renewable energy
With the lake never far out of view, it’s clear Rowlett has some natural splendors to protect. Luckily the Lone Star State is taking the fate of renewable energy seriously, investing in increased solar power and already dominating where wind energy is concerned.
For Rowlett residents who are looking to go green, there are a few providers who offer renewable energy solutions. Both Amigo Energy and Green Mountain Energy offer clean power plans in the Rowlett area.
